2nd IEEE Workshop on Spectrum Access in Autonomous Vehicle Ecosystem (SAVE 2021)

The technical community is quickly coming to the realization that wireless connectivity is a necessary ingredient for the future of autonomous vehicles in terms of this revolutionary technology to reach the level of reliability and functionality needed to operate on public streets and highways en masse. Many of the future road applications that will be based on autonomous vehicles, such as platooning, will require wireless connectivity in order to support the control loop, sensors information sharing, and inter-car communications need to successfully achieve complex operations. However, it is unclear whether sufficient wireless spectral bandwidth exists to support these sorts of communications, which could potentially require hundreds of megahertz of frequency. For example, in the United States and other countries around the world, only 75 MHz of licensed vehicular communications spectrum exists at 5.9 GHz, which may suffer significant channel congestion, especially with high density road traffic and significant wireless connectivity. In this workshop, we will provide a comprehensive half-day event that will actively bring together experts in Vehicular Dynamic Spectrum Access (VDSA), experts in autonomous vehicle technology, and individuals interested in learning more about this cutting-edge topic. This half-day workshop will address a range of practical issues with respect to wireless connectivity for autonomous vehicles and provides insights on how to resolve this problems in order to create a viable VDSA network for the autonomous vehicle ecosystem.

For spectrum access in autonomous vehicle ecosystem, the topics include but are not limited to the following:

  1. Interference management approaches in VDSA
  2. Resource allocation including radio, computing, and cashing in VDSA
  3. Security in VDSA
  4. Advanced data processing for VDSA
  5. Distributed approaches, overhead issues and coordination techniques
  6. Autonomous vs coordinated driving
  7. Database creation and maintenance for automotive
  8. VDSA testbed, simulators, and experimentation platforms

Given that the concept of autonomous driving is of great interest to the vehicular technology community, we foresee that the focus on VDSA coupled with autonomous driving would be relevant to the following audience:

  1. For car manufacturers, including those companies producing dedicated communication hardware and electronics
  2. For researchers working on C-V2X and DSRC/WAVE
  3. For researchers working on wireless communications, and particularly for those focusing on spectrum sharing
  4. For researchers conducting activities into intelligent transportation, autonomous vehicles, traffic flow control, and smart transportation/roads
  5. For shipping companies and public transportation organizations that would be one of the first widespread adopters of autonomous vehicle technology

Attendees will learn about the concept of autonomous vehicles operation supported by Vehicular Dynamic Spectrum Access (VDSA). Its advantages will be presented together with challenges that will be encountered. The topics can range from methods of spectrum sensing carried in V2X environment, spectrum opportunities assessment, and spectrum management. From the perspective of the PHY and MAC layers of the vehicles, spectrum congestion and proper design of spectrum access protocols will be discussed. Additionally, topics of control theorem used in complex operations such as platooning utilizing specific sets of features will be covered.
